Blog Tour: The Maze Cutter, by James Dashner.

In the early 2010s, there were few stories that defined hype more than YA trilogies; The Hunger games, Divergent and The Maze Runner, to name a few.

If I told you that you’d be getting A NEW Maze Runner Novel, you’d probably say “In 2022? Yeah, right. When pigs fly.”  You’d be wrong, because James Dashner is back on the page bringing us a follow-up to what happened after we left Thomas and his friends in their new-found freedom and paradise all those years ago. It’s the book teenage me would have begged for, and i’m not complaining about it now.

“Maze,” Miyoko said. “Holy crap in a handbasket. It says The Maze Cutter.”

See my Special Blog Tour Below, with a second review in my usual format coming on release day:

Summary: Seventy-three years after the events of THE DEATH CURE, when Thomas and other
immunes were sent to an island to survive the Flare-triggered apocalypse, their descendants
have thrived. Sadina, Isaac, and Jackie all learned about the unkind history of the Gladers from The Book of Newt and tall tales from Old Man Frypan, but when a rusty old boat shows
up one day with a woman bearing dark news of the mainland–everything changes. The group
and their islander friends are forced to embark back to civilization where they find Cranks
have evolved into a more violent, intelligent version of themselves. The islanders are hunted
by the Godhead, the Remnant Nation, and scientists with secret agendas. When they cross
paths with an orphan named Minho from the Remnant Nation, the dangers become real and
they don’t know who they can trust. The islanders will have to survive long enough to figure
out why they are being targeted, who is friend or foe, and what the Godhead has planned for
the future of humanity.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I had NO idea what to think when going into the Maze Cutter. Did I read every other Maze Runner Universe Novel and Novella in Preperation for it? Yes, I did. I was well up to date on all my Maze-Runner Lore. I’d read literally all his other books in a week, and I was ready to dive in head first to a new adventure. A few hundred pages and a couple of hours later, and I was already needing another new book.

Following on from strong foundations set by the ending of the Death cure, and the Novella The Kill Order, The Maze Cutter starts off on unsure feet. It gives us a lot of information and action with no real reasoning behind it-throwing us straight into a world we’re unfamiliar with, because, like the gladers and their families, we have no idea what’s been happening to the earth since the end of WICKED. Luckily for us, we get given context as we go. Every piece of information that gets dripped to us gave me more reason to continue reading. I wanted to figure out what was going on. I needed to figure out what was going on. It was only as I put together the puzzle pices and the shape came into view that I realised I actually cared about these characters and what was happening to them. It felt like I was trying to uphold the legacy that Thomas and the Gladers had left behind. They had to make the right choices and it had to go right, because if it didn’t then what was all of Thomas’ hard work for?

The book uses Multi POV to show us all sides of what we’ve missed; who are the Godhead and the Remnant nation? How have they evolved from the scraps that WICKED left behind? It’s a look into a world that we didn’t know we needed, but now that I have it I don’t want it to go anywhere. For once, it shows us how everyone that wans’t just a glader was affected by the Flare and WICKED’s failing to find a cure. Surely the world couldn’t be as bad as WICKED imagined it would be…right? (Hint: Wrong. In so many ways it’s so much worse.)

Is the book just a nostalgia trip clinging to the feelings we had for the original characters? No. It stands out on it’s own, but it definitely relies on us knowing our history.

It’s an action packed adventure, that YA fans won’t want to miss. Especially if there’s still a little room in your heart dedicated to the stories you used to love-Or if you’re a new fan, ready to make room for some more.

Now that you’ve heard how great the book is, it’s….
